What exactly is a "Humbucker" guitar pickup?
i've been hearing a lot about humbuckers lately, but i have no idea what they are and how they work. how are they different from regular pickups, and are humbuckers and double coil pickups the same thing? Is this also the same thing as "noise canceling"? And how exactly do all these things work?

Single coil pickups generate alot of hum because they only have one signal going into the amp. Humbuckers are essentially 2 SCs right next to each other. By doing this, the two signals are combined to cancel out most of the hum (hence the name). You can try this on most guitars with multiple single coils by setting the pickup switch to use more than one (on a strat, position 2 or 4). I've also heard that Humbuckers have a higher output, but SCs supposedly have more of a twang sound, but I haven't tested it out yet. Another type of pickup you could look into are EMGs. These are usually called "active pickups", because they require a 9V battery to use, but they have a much wider variety of tones. Upgrading a pickup in my opinion however is a waste of time, as one humbucker will cost at least 100 USD, and replacing them is not an easy thing to do.
Noise canceling is different. These are specific boxes designed to cancel the hum before the signal enters the amp (much like a stompbox). These start around 50 USD, but they do not benefit the tone (in fact, as with all devices between the guitar and the amp, they probably make it a little worse).

Compared to SC pickups, humbuckers with side-by-side coils connected in series will provide more output at the expense of top-end response though.
